Mon blog

D'artiste pastelliste

Welcome to my blog: Pastels, inspiration, and artistic journeys !

Here, I wanted to create a space that’s a little more intimate and lively than my traditional portfolio, to take you behind the scenes of my work. Dry pastel is a demanding, vibrant medium, full of nuances, but it’s also a wonderful way to build connections and travel.

Through this blog, I wanted to organize my posts around three main themes that drive my daily life as an artist:

  • Exhibitions I’ve Attended: I’ll take you with me to my exhibition openings, from pastel shows in France to major international institutions (such as my exhibitions in Geneva or Vienna). There, I’ll share my encounters, my emotions on-site, and a behind-the-scenes look at these events.
  • Painters: We never create alone. Here, I’ll share my favorites—the masters of the past and contemporary artists who inspire me, shape my perspective, and nourish my practice.
  • Pastel Techniques: Pastel has its secrets! I’ll open the doors to my studio to discuss materials, papers, brushwork, and tips for setting or layering colors.

I look forward to connecting with you through these posts. Feel free to leave comments below the articles to let me know what intrigues you or what you’d like to learn more about!

How do you create a portrait using dry pastels? Here, I’ll walk you through the different steps involved in creating one of my pastel drawings.

On view at the Palais Galliera through October 18, 2026, the exhibition *Weaving, Embroidery, and Embellishment: The Artistry of Fashion* showcases textile decoration techniques.

When I first met Sylvie, what immediately struck me was the gentleness in her gaze and, at the same time, the quiet flame that drives her. A pastel artist based in Greater Geneva, she brings to life portraits of women with remarkable sensitivity and precision.
She portrays them through fabrics from around the world: a crumpled sari, a delicate veil, a hand-embroidered textile. Behind each drape, she seeks far more than a beautiful rendering of texture. She explores identity, cultural diversity, and the quiet dignity that inhabits each face. Her soft pastels tell stories without words, through colours that echo one another, shadows that gently caress the skin, and folds that become a language of their own.
I had the privilege of accompanying her for a time in my studio. Those were precious moments, filled with experimentation, sincere exchanges, small victories and wonderful surprises. I can still picture some of the works in progress—the moments of hesitation, followed by the creative impulse taking over. Today, seeing her flourish fully in her freedom as a woman and an artist fills me with profound joy. Her recognition continues to grow, and I realise how fortunate I was to cross paths with her and, in my own modest way, to have contributed to her journey. I wanted to share this sense of pride because it is sincere and, quite simply, deeply moving to me.

The Town of Ornex had the pleasure of exhibiting Sylvie Sanseau’s work in its premises for three months.
Through a series of magnificent portraits of women created in pastel, Sylvie Sanseau captivated visitors with the delicacy of her work, the precision of her drawing and the striking realism of her pieces. Each portrait has a genuine presence and reflects great artistic mastery.
The exhibition was very warmly received by the public, who greatly appreciated the quality and sensitivity of her work.

Sylvie is an extraordinary artist whose mastery of pastel painting shines through every piece she creates. Her work carries a quiet power delicate, expressive, and unmistakably her own.
We are fortunate to count her among our members. Her dedication to her art is reflected in the beautiful exhibitions in which she regularly participates. Her artistic journey and her work continue to inspire us.

Sylvie Sanseau’s art is a testimony of her love for India, its women and the ever elegant saree. It is evident in the beautiful way she paints the women. It is so vibrant and lifelike that it seems her subjects are going to step off the canvas and talk to you. The expressions on the faces of her subjects are exceptionally lifelike. Her command over the canvas is breathtaking indeed!
I always forward to seeing her paintings. Without doubt she is an artist par excellence!

Your paintings never cease to fill me with admiration. What strikes me most, beyond the drapery, is the remarkable accuracy of your subjects’ gazes. They convey an infinite gentleness—deeply affecting, almost contagious, I would say. A touch of grace in these troubled times.

When genius meets art, the result is something wonderful. Thank you for your magnificent paintings. Thank you for these magnificent pastels, which invites us to slow down and truly look. So many experiences gathered throughout your travels, so many discoveries shared through works that gradually reveal themselves, giving us time to experience and feel them.

As an Indian woman, it is a true joy to discover Sylvie’s works inspired by Indian saris. What a pleasure to see so much life in each of her creations.

Figures, colours, drapery. My eyes are filled with wonder as they take in these lives where light and colour are ever-present. Thank you for these journeys.
